A portrait of the island

The Island

São Miguel · Azores

Where the Atlantic meets the green. A place made of light, mist and sleeping craters — photographed by someone who actually lives here.

The island light

In the morning, mist slides down the craters. By late afternoon, everything turns to gold.

São Miguel changes hour by hour. I know the right moments — and the places where the light falls best.

Where to shoot

The island's spots

Six of my favourite places in São Miguel. Each one asks for its own hour and its own light.

Azorean crater lake ringed by green hillsides
Twin crater

Sete Cidades

The most iconic lake in the Azores, the crater opening up in blue and green. Best early in the morning, before the mist lifts.

Hot springs in the sea

Ponta da Ferraria

Where volcanic hot water meets the Atlantic, on the western tip of the island. Late afternoon, with the sun dropping right in front of you.

North coast

Ribeira Grande

Waves, black cliffs and the sea breaking non-stop. It's where I live — and where most of my surf photos happen.

Lagoa do Fogo

Crystal water ringed by wild hillside, right in the heart of the island. Dramatic light late in the day, when the clouds finally open.

Golden late afternoon through the greenery on the south coast of São Miguel
Sheltered south

Caloura

Small harbour, calm water and dark rock. The right call when the north side is blown out — and a gorgeous backdrop for couples.

Fumaroles and steam in the Furnas valley, in the Azores
Volcanic valley

Furnas

Fumaroles, steam rising straight out of the ground and green on every side. The island raw and unfiltered, over on the east.
