The most iconic lake in the Azores, the crater opening up in blue and green. Best early in the morning, before the mist lifts.

A portrait of the island
São Miguel · Azores
Where the Atlantic meets the green. A place made of light, mist and sleeping craters — photographed by someone who actually lives here.

The island light
São Miguel changes hour by hour. I know the right moments — and the places where the light falls best.
Where to shoot
Six of my favourite places in São Miguel. Each one asks for its own hour and its own light.

The most iconic lake in the Azores, the crater opening up in blue and green. Best early in the morning, before the mist lifts.

Where volcanic hot water meets the Atlantic, on the western tip of the island. Late afternoon, with the sun dropping right in front of you.

Waves, black cliffs and the sea breaking non-stop. It's where I live — and where most of my surf photos happen.

Crystal water ringed by wild hillside, right in the heart of the island. Dramatic light late in the day, when the clouds finally open.

Small harbour, calm water and dark rock. The right call when the north side is blown out — and a gorgeous backdrop for couples.

Fumaroles, steam rising straight out of the ground and green on every side. The island raw and unfiltered, over on the east.
